20 years on

The more I listened to Liam telling his story, the more grateful I became about our daily shared cup of tea.

Too milky for my Eastern European taste, yet it was my prop, something to hold onto when the telling became too hard to listen to.

This episode tells the most beautiful story from my career. Working in homelessness,  I have encountered the most extraordinary people and the most humbling life experiences.

Today’s story is one I never told before. I started telling you little snippets gradually on instagram, and if you would like to visit those, you can find the prologue here, episode 1, 2, 3 and 4 here.

Today, you get the conclusion.

This one story I am most grateful for, since being part of it has had a decisive effect on my life.

DISCUSSION

Towards the end of the podcast, Pawel and I discuss gratitude and whether practising it daily makes us more in tune with ourselves and the world around us.

INSPIRATION: This episode’s recommendation is Gilead, by Marilynne Robinson, a delicate and graceful book about loving life as it is given to us and embracing doubt, wobbles and failure as they come.

I am not sure that the book talks about gratitude, but I felt grateful reading it. And finding the book was in itself another story.

The happy times we live in

I have lived through history and today I have decided to tell you about it.

This is where you can find out more about those times, and also see images from my own child like perspective.

DISCUSSION

Do we appreciate the times we live in? Are they indeed as fragile as they once seemed? Once, in my childhood, peace was a volatile concept. Is that still the case?

INSPIRATION

It was hard to decide just on one recommendation for today’s post.

On learning to appreciate the happy times we live in: Olga Tokarczuk – Primeval and Other Times.

On communism. This is an excellent film. It’s witty, it’s funny, it’s informative.

This is what the Romanian Revolution was about.

What helps me appreciate what I have and relax in that appreciation.

Compassion and suspended jumpers

STORY

A Christmas jumper’s alternative life. Once loved and worn over and over, yet in another life, discarded on a beach in Lesbos.

DISCUSSION

When and why do we feel compassion? How should we react to tragedy around us? And what does that teach us about our everyday lives?

Join us on this journey of trying to understand this concept a little more and maybe also stop with us a second to see the sadness that a child-size Christmas jumper was once witness to.

INSPIRATION

This episode’s recommendation is Tania Bruguera’s Hyundai Commission at the Tate.

The exhibition we mention in the show is by a British artist whose details can be found here.

CHANCE ENCOUNTERS

ON CHANCE ENCOUNTERS, DREADLOCKS AND HOW WE MET

This episode is about us. But also about chance, reasons to stay together and … good conversations.

You can find out more about us here and here.

DISCUSSION

Was ours a chance encounter? Were we meant to be? Does it matter that one of us believes we are destined for each other, and the other one… might not?

INSPIRATION

This episode’s recommendation is Kieslowski’s BLIND CHANCE.
